Finet (2001): Type locality of Arene ferruginosa is not Galápagos. However, in his paper with the original description of the species, McLean (1970: 123) referred also to 3 specimens from the Galápagos collected by the Allan Hancock expedition (AHF station 430, in 150 fathoms at Wenman Island). On the basis of this record, the occurrence of the species in the Archipelago was subsequently repeated by McLean in Keen (1971 : “dwarf specimens have been taken off the Galápagos Islands...”), and by Finet (1985; 1991; 1994) and Kaiser (1993). But the specimens from AHF station 430 are juveniles not easily identifiable; actually, they proved not to pertain to the species A. ferruginosa, as they were later redetermined by McLean (in litt., 1995) as Arene echinata (now LACM 34-264.2: two specimens) and Arene guttata (now LACM 34-264.3: one specimen), respectively. Actually, there seems to be no other available record to document the occurrence of Arene ferruginosa in the Galápagos, which is thus better listed as a species with a dubious occurrence. This question was first discussed in Finet (1995).
