Finet (2001): This species was originally described from an unknown locality (Reeve, Proc. Zool. Soc. Lond., 1843: 186), but later on, Reeve (Conch. Icon., 1848, Turbo, pl. 5 fig. 21) cited the Galapagos Islands as locality for the specimens collected by H. Cuming. Subsequent authors (Carpenter, 1857; Stearns, 1893 & 1894; Dall, 1909; Tomlin, 1928) also quoted the species from the Galapagos. The locality mentioned by Reeve may be erroneous, and later records may have been based upon misidentifications; there seems to be no actual evidence of the occurrence of this species in the Galapagos (see also Finet, 1994 & 1995).
Origin: Native
Distribution: Bahia San Luis Gonzaga, Gulf of California, to Peru and Ecuador (including Galapagos islands).
