Galapagos Species Database

Taxon category: Accepted

Syn.: Terebra gracilis Gray, 1834 (non Lea, 1833). Finet (2001): The holotype of T. grayi (BMNH: n° 1874.10.29.1) is also the type of T. gracilis Gray; the locality given was “S.E. Africa ?”. Another possible syntype of T. gracilis Gray (BMNH: n° 1874.10.29.2) is also a possible paralectotype of Terebra frigata Hinds, 1844, a Panamic and Galapagan species. Terebra grayi has been cited from the Galapagos in Keen (1971), but according to Bratcher (pers. comm., 1983) and Bratcher & Cernohorsky (1987), it is a West African species, not a South African nor a Panamic species. Records from the Galapagos or the eastern Pacific may be based upon confusions or misidentifications.
