Usnea dorogawensis
rumibarba, liquen de barba, barba de la piedra, barbas de viejo, Beard lichen
Chemistry: Medulla K+ yellow turning orangered, P+ yellow: norstictic, 6 connorstictic, 6 lobaric acids (n = 3).
Usnea dorogawensis is characterized by an orange subcortical pigmentation in the medulla and excavate, enlarging soralia on the terminal branches, lacking isidiomorphs. It has a very small (2 cm), erect thallus, with fusiform branches that are distinctly inflated and constricted at the attachment point. The CMA is of the cornuta-type: a thin cortex (3–4%), shiny in section and with a smooth surface (without papillae), a very lax medulla (37–39%) and a thin axis (15–19%), with an A/M ratio , 0.5 (n 5 3). Specimens from the Galapagos share the same morphology and chemistry than Japanese specimens, although they lack the presence of stictic acid in the medulla that was reported in Japanese specimens.
