Syn.: Hyptis rhomboidea Martens & Galeotti (POWO, 2022); Possible misidentification of Hyptis rhomboidea. Wiggins & Porter (1971) report: "This species is closely related to H. capitata Jacq., but has somewhat narrower and smaller bracts below the heads of the flowers, and broader and shorter calyx teeth" H. capitata is not cited by Wiggins & Porter, though H. capitata var. pilosa and H. capitata var. mexicana are cited as synonyms of H. rhomboidea.
