This may be an uncommon species, recorded only from Pinzon and Fernandina Islands; found growing on rock 24-26 m (Hickman, et al. 2021).
Named after Rob Van Soest, for his assistance with the identification of this sponge, and his contribution to our knowledge of sponges(Sim-Smith et al., 2021).

Holotype: MCCDRS9436, Pinzón Island, 0.619° S, 90.685° W, 24 m, 22 Jun 2001: Paratype: MCCDRS9435, Camp Copiano (Puerto Priscila), Fernandina Island, 0.357° S, 91.382° W, 26 m, 23 Aug 2003; Type locality: Pinzón Island (Sim-Smith et al., 2021).
