Syn.: Sargocentron suborbitale (Gill, 1863), Holocentrum suborbitale Gill, 1863, Holocentrus suborbitalis Gill, 1863, Neoniphon suborbitalis (Gill, 1863), Sargocentron suborbitalis (Gill, 1863), Sargocentron suborbitale (Gill, 1863) fide Ahyong, S. et al. (2023). Note: From the molecular analysis performed, we summarize that there is a clade that includes several smaller-bodied species, most of which are placed within Sargocentron (plus the species N. opercularis, N. sammara, N. argenteus) and a clade that includes Sargocentron suborbitalis. Based on the inclusion of N. sammara, we designate Neoniphon (Castelnau, 1875) as the generic name for the species in this clade (Dornburg, A., et al. 2012). ?
