Syn.: Paranthias colonus (Valenciennes 1846) based in Fricke, R. et al. (2023). Victor, B. C. et al. (2024) mention: "Cephalopholis colonus replaces Epinephelus colonus or Paranthias colonus since phylogenetic studies show the species is closely related to other Cephalopholis species within the family Epinephelidae (Ma & Craig 2018)".
