Taxon category: Accepted

Syn.: Cladonia balfourii, fide Ahti (2000); F. Bungartz: all Galapagos specimens contain thamnolic and didymic acid and specimens previously identified as C. macilenta var. bacillaris are misidentifications of C. bungartzii or C. macilenta s.str. (Yánez-Ayabaca et al. 2000), reported by Weber (1986) as Cladonia macilenta ssp. theiophila (Asahina) Asahina.
