Thallus thick, continuous to rimose or rimose-areolate, pale bluish gray, pale gray, becoming creamy white with storage; surface mealy pruinose, ecorticate; Apothecia deeply sunken into the thallus, lirellate; lirellae elongate, slender, labia inconspicuous, whitish, mealy; disc concealed, a thin slit, rarely ±irregularly expanded and whitish pruinose; exciple thin, colorless to pale brown, not carbonized; hymenium hyaline, clear (not inspers), I+ bluish violet (at least in the upper parts); ascospores hyaline, I+ bluish violet, 8 per ascus, large, narrowly ellipsoid to oblong, 39-64(68) x 9-11 µm, muriform, 8-12 vs. 2-3 celled. Chemistry: Hypostictic, hypoconstictic, and α-acetylhypoconstictic acid (according to Staiger 2004b); thallus K+ yellow.
