Thallus thin, continuous to rimose, lead gray to whitish gray, occasionally tinged yellowish brown in parts; surface smooth, not pruinose; Apothecia prominent to sessile, lirellate; lirellae relatively broad and short, rarely ±elongate, not branched, or very sparsely branched; labia entire, shiny black, not covered by thallus and basally without thalline rim (Opegrapha-like); disc concealed, a thin slit; exciple completely carbonized, carbonization extending below the hymenium; hymenium hyaline, clear (not inspers), I–; ascospores hyaline, I+ bluish violet, 8 per ascus, narrowly oblong to fusiform, 50-70 x 11-15 µm, transversely septate, 8-15 celled. Chemistry: No substances found; all spot tests negative.

The relatively short, broad, blackened Opegrapha-like lirellae are characteristic for this species. Material with similar lirellae was previously identified as G. desquamescens, but the specimens do not contain norstictic acid. The material therefore either belongs to G. anfractuosa or G. adpressa, both superficially extremely similar. G. anfractuosa, however, is distinguished by a strongly inspers hymenium, and shorter ascospores with fewer spore septa.

Map of specimen collection localities or observation records for this species in our collections database.

Distribution: A neotropical species; moderately common throughout the humid zone, rarely also in the high altitude dry zone, mostly in disturbed, fragmented forests, on bark of introduced trees like Cinchona pubescens, Inga sp., Ochroma pyramidale, but also on native species like Chiococca alba, or Scalesia spp.
