A small tree with a twisted trunk, 3-8 m tall and green tough alternate leaves. The small flowers and bunches of scaled fruits are present all year round. Fruit is reddish- brown (McMullen, 1999).

Distribution: The native range of this species is S. Florida to Peru and Brazil, and W. Tropical Africa to N. Angola (POWO, 2023).
