Phaeographis punctiformis
liquen de escritura, Script lichen
Thallus thick, rimose to rimose-areolate, pale creamy white, with a distinct yellowish tinge; surface dull, not pruinose; Apothecia prominent, ±circular to oval, rarely ±lirellate; proper margin thin, indistinct, surrounded by a distinct thalline margin; disc expanded, flattened, epruinose; exciple laterally carbonized, basally pale yellowish or brown; hymenium hyaline, inspers, I–; ascospores pale gray, brownish with age, I+ red or reddish brown, 8 per ascus, narrowly oblong, 17-26 x 6-8 µm, transversely septate, 5-7 celled. Chemistry: Lichexanthone, UV+ bright yellow.
This species can hardly be confused with any other Phaeographis because of the pale yellowish, UV+ bright yellow thallus, the circular, rarely elongate apothecia with expanded black disc and thick thalline margin. At first glance, specimens could be mistaken for P. lobulata, which lacks the yellowish tinge, has weakly pruinose disks and a papery thin margin.
