Herb, mostly 30 cm tall, monoecious; leaves alternate, stipules auriculate; flowers in axillary cymules; sepals 6; seed finely verrucose 0.6-1 mm long, dull to dark grayish brown (Wiggins and Porter, 1971).

At margins of forest, among trees and shrubs, or on grassy hillsides (Wiggins and Porter, 1971).
