(2010), Jean-Dominique Durand (unpublished): Phylogenetic reconstruction indicates that Mugil galapagensis belong to the Mugil cephalus species complex, with a close phylogenetic relationship with the Mugil "cephalus" sp. observed in Chile.

Distribution: Tropical Pacific, and Clipperton, Cocos, Revillagigedos and Ecuador in the Galapagos Islands. Southern California to Ecuador and all the oceanic islands of the eastern pacific. Indo-Pacific.
