Cirrhitus rivulatus Valenciennes, 1846

carabalí, mero chino, Hieroglyphic hawkfish, giant hawkfish

Medium to light olive to brown. Large, fat lips; tassels on tips of dorsal fin spines. Juvenile - Orange scrawled markings on top of head and red first dorsal fin. Lengths of at least 43 cm.

Habitat: Solitary, bottom-living; found in shallow waters along the rocky shorelines and in reef areas.

Distribution: Eastern Pacific, from upper Gulf of California to Colombia, and Clipperton, Cocos, Malpelo, Revillagigedos and Galapagos. Unknown from the mainland of Ecuador.
