Syn.: Physalis galapagoensis Waterf.; Syn.: Physalis porrecta Waterf.; Physalis galapagoensis Waterf. and Physalis clarionensis Waterf. According Martínez (1998) P. galapagoensis is a synonym of P. cordata, even when "Neither the holotype nor the isotype has been located; however, examination of the 13 additional collections cited by Waterfall leaves little doubt as to the taxon concerned, and its name relegated to synonymy herein". Pretz & Deanna (2020) clarified that "although the protologue for P. galapagoensis states the type to be I.L.Wiggin 18724, it was obvious after referring to Wiggins’s field notebook that this was a typo. I.L. Wiggins 18724 was identified as Maytenus obovata while I.L. Wiggins 18727 was labeled as P. galapagoensis, which matches the description in the protologue" and also considering P. galapagoensis as synonym of P. cordata.
