The Galapagos Species Database shares the information about the species from our Natural History Collections.
Plumularia floridana
hidroide, Hidroide, Hydroids
Colonies are small and fern like, 1.5 mm high, branches alternate (approximately 3.2 mm long), and with sessile, cup-shaped hydrothecae. Form is more compact in areas of strong current.
Found on firm subtidal substrates.

Note: Plumularia sinuosa, originally described from the Galapagos and Mexico, is considered a questionable synonym of P. floridana. Collected from Salinas, Ecuador, and various Galapagos islands, its molecular data differ from Atlantic and Pacific populations. Cryptic diversity suggests it may represent different species, but the name P. floridana is retained for Ecuador material (Calder, et al., 2021). Syn.: Plumularia alicia Torrey, 1902, Plumularia alicia var. minuta Billard, 1927, Plumularia indica Mammen, 1965, Plumularia pennycuikae Millard & Bouillon, 1973 (Horton et al., 2021).
Origin: Cryptogenic

Distribution: Galapagos Island in Isabela (Fraser, 1938); Isabela Punta Vicente Roca, Sombrerero Chino; Fernandina, Punta Espinosa (Calder et., 2003). Tropical Eastern Pacific, Gulf of California, Ecuador: Salina and Bahía Santa Elena, and the Galapagos Islands: Isabela, Santa Cruz and Fernandina (Calder et al., 2021).
