Corchorus orinocensis Kunth

escoba negra, espadilla, té de monte, red jute, Orinoco jute

Annual plant, 1-5 dm tall, with sparsely to moderately pubescent stems and ovate leaf-blades. The flowers are solitary, and the petals are yellow (Wiggins and Porter, 1971).

Found along margins of pools and streams, on moist or seepy ground, and in disturbed soil (Wiggins and Porter, 1971).

Taxon category: Accepted

Syn.: Corchorus hirtus var. orinocensis (Kunth) K. Schum. This species, as reported by Wiggins & Porter (1971), most likely also refers to Corchorus pilobolus Link sensu Robinson (1902) et Stewart (1911). 1st June 2021 family changed to Malvaceae (Patricia Jaramillo & María del Mar Trigo).

Distribution: The native range of this species is S. Mexico to Tropical America (POWO, 2023).
