In Hooker (1847) as Verbena polystachya Kunth, Andersson (1855) as Verbena caroliniana L., Robinson (1902) and Stewart (1911) as Verbena carolina L. May be part of a very variable V. litoralis. Known only from Type and no specimens available that match its description.
