Perennial plant with a smooth, leafy base and brownish, purple sheaths, glumes 2-2.5 mm long, straw-colored or yellow-brownish, apex recurved-cuspidate (Wiggins and Porter 1971)

Found in open wet places along sandy shores and on lava beds to 300m (Wiggins and Porter, 1971).
