Colonias pequeñas, de 1-2 cm de altura con tallos en zig-zag, un mando en forma de manubrio y pediceladas hydrothecae en forma de tubo. Más compacto en las zonas de fuerte corriente.
Se encuentra en zonas de corrientes fuertes y débiles.

Note: Obelia alternata was often misidentified as O. dichotoma due to underestimation of species diversity. Distinctive features include geniculate stems and short, annulated hydrothecal pedicels. It is recognized as a valid species, known only from the Galapagos Islands, and was collected from Isla San Cristóbal (Calder, et al. 2021).
